What are the legal requirements for home schooling grade school age kids?

home school

Question by juniper: What are the legal requirements for home schooling grade school age kids?
If I decide to home-school one or more of my children, what legal requirements do I have to meet in Illinois? One child is in 5th grade, the other would be in kindergarten next year. The reason would be the lack of quality education and quality teachers available where we live.

Here are the laws and regs for Illinois: http://hslda.org/laws/analysis/Illinois.pdf

Homeschools in IL are considered to be private schools; as long as you are educating your daughter according to her ability, and you keep appropriate records, you should be fine. :)

Question by LiveLaughLove: What is home schooling / going to an online school like?
I am 14 and I have gone to both public and private school and neither has worked with my schedule. Now I am checking out home schooling and it seems really interesting. I checked out a few online high schools like the Laurel Springs School but I just want to see what people think about it. Also if you can tell me any more online schools to check out that would be great. Thanks!

Factors to Consider When Home Schooling

There are a lot of reasons to choose to home school your kids. Maybe you don't like the way your local schools are run. Perhaps you don't like the curriculum used in the schools. Sometimes it's the family bonds. Perhaps you don't like public school and private school isn't financially possible for you. Maybe you have your own educational ideas. Whatever the reason you might be thinking of homeschooling, it is important that you not overlook your curriculum choices. How do you choose your homeschooling curriculum? Read the remainder of this article for some popular options.

How about Charlotte Mason's method? Charlotte mason was an important educator at the turn of the twentieth century. Her focus was on life, discipline and atmosphere. There are two main focuses, living books, and the homes atmosphere overall. Her methods were very strict ("discipline") and centered on forming good study and academic habits while also making sure that the schooling subjects were easily approached through "living" examples instead of just dry facts. There are lots of places to buy Charlotte Mason's curriculum (or new materials that embrace her curriculum approaches).

Your kids are still required to take the standardized tests sent out by the government and state even if you're home schooling them. Brick and mortar schools set aside days every year for the students to take these tests. Your kids may need to take these tests in a "traditional classroom" so you will need to contact your local school board if you want to proctor them yourself at home. Some school systems even set aside certain days for home schooled kids to take the test together.

Your local school board will be your best resource in determining how to approach these yearly standardized tests.

There are several factors to consider when planning your home school approach and curriculum. Your child's personal learning style is the first thing you need to consider. Your strengths and weaknesses as a teacher also need to be considered. The nice thing about home schooling is that you have more freedom to play up your strengths as you put together your curriculum. You will be able to play to everyone's strengths, really, as you won't be stuck with strict curriculum practices or units. it is a proven fact that home schooling is valuable to your kids. Most home schooled kids do better on tests as well as in college. Family bonds are stronger with home schooled kids. This is good news for those who've thought about home schooling but worried about it's efficacy. Before you consider home schooling you need to research curricula so you know which one you will uses. Do some research and talk to other parents. A path for you to follow will be the result of your hard work!

The Great Home Schooling Debate

Home schooling has been around for quite some time now. The debate about it's overall effectiveness has been going on for just as long. Recently however, home schooling has been gaining more and more advocates in support of it.

For the longest time, home schooling has been viewed with a somewhat contemptuous attitude by many. They're under the misguided notion that this type of schooling is for weirdoes and social misfits.

People these days are much more open minded about the idea of home schooling. Lots more parents are choosing to put their kids in some kind of home based program.

So what are the possible reasons for parents to home school their kids? What are the advantages and disadvantages of home schooling? Is it right for your child and what must be taken into consideration when choosing to home school your child?

Home schooling has traditionally been for those children who suffer from some kind of condition or whose current circumstances don't allow them to attend regular school. However, more and more parents are choosing to home school their children because they believe it to be a more beneficial alternative to traditional schools.

There are a lot of advantages to be taken from this type of schooling.

Home schooling allows a child be taught in a more individualized way. The child will not have to compete with several other students for the time and attention of the teacher. Their parent is their teacher and the one-on-one teaching that the child receives will increase the quality of learning.

The nature of this schooling allows for an incredible amount of flexibility and freedom in regards to learning. The lessons and curriculum to be undertaken can be custom made to suit the particular educational needs of the child.

The child can also learn at their own pace, seeing as there's no set schedule that must be followed. A child can take as much time as they need to learn something without being pressured, or they can go as quickly as they can, learning things that would normally take a much longer time to cover in a classroom.

In many cases home schooling will enforce an inherent love of learning and will strengthen the child abilities to learn on their own. These skill will become a valuable asset throughout their lives.

Many parents home school their kids in order to instill moral values that can't be sufficiently achieved in traditional schools. This is especially true if they feel that the child is easily influenced and the schools in the area are a particularly bad influence.

Home schooling helps to cultivate family ties. The time that the family spend together teaching and learning helps to strengthen family bonds.

Thanks to more advanced technology and in particular the internet, home schooling has become even more effective. The internet is a vast source of knowledge and you can find a plethora of home schooling resources like sample curriculums, lesson plans, and all sorts of guides.

The greatest criticism aimed at home schooling is that it might hamper the child's social growth. Home schooled kids tend to be more isolated and many feel that this is harmful.

This isn't necessarily the case though, as studies have shown that many home schooled adults have excellent social skills and are living happy, meaningful lives.

These studies also show that home schooled individuals tend to do better academically than traditionally schooled individuals.

Despite the seemingly many benefits of home schooling, it isn't for everyone. Parents should take in mind several considerations before taking the plunge.

Home schooling takes a tremendous amount of time and effort on the part of the parents.

Teaching will take up most of the teaching parent's day, so this means that the they will most likely not have the time to work. The family must be able to cope with this situation. This is especially difficult for single parents.

Also, the parent must be sure that they will be able teach their child properly and handle all the possible problems and responsibilities that come with being home schooled.

Home schooling, when done right can have very positive results. However, getting it wrong can result in absolute disaster. Ultimately, it's up to the parents to assess their child and decide if home schooling is the right choice for them.

Sending your child to a public or private school can bring with it many problems. Your child will be exposed to other children who are sick, who have not been vaccinated, and who do not have the same beliefs and values as you. You may find that your child is coming home from school with ideas and thoughts you do not agree with. Children are extremely impressionable and having peers with different beliefs is an issue for many parents. By choosing to home school your child, you will be their primary enforcer and can teach them the beliefs and values you want them to learn. You will not have to worry about your child interacting with other children you do not know. Your child will still be able to have social outlets, as that is an important aspect of growing up, but you will be able to know and meet their friends.

When home schooling your children, you have the option of enrolling them in an online school. These are extremely beneficial for children who are home schooled as they offer support to both parents and students. Online schools hire credentialed teachers and staff to assist your child when needed. Your child is also held accountable for assignments. Each student must complete assignments on time and be responsible for completing them. Online schools are wonderful for parents who also work outside the home and are not able to spend their entire day with their child but still want the benefits of home schooling. Many parents complain of the difficulty in getting a hold of their child's teacher. The staff at online schools is available by phone or e-mail so many parents actually feel they get better responses from them than they did when their child actually went to school.

Many parents find that the relationships within their families improve when their children are home schooled. While many may worry that siblings who spend so much time together will fight and argue more, the opposite is actually true. Siblings who are home schooled tend to get along better and find their relationships are stronger than those who are not home schooled. While each child will still have peers of their own age, they will spend more time with their siblings getting to know them better and finding they have more in common than they may have previously thought. Parents also find their relationship with their children greatly improves. By being the primary teacher in your children's life, you will find that they respect you in a different way than they did when they thought of you as just their parent. Your conversations will be enhanced as you begin to teach them in a way you want them to be taught. You will find that your children will be more open with you and look to you for encouragement and wisdom.

The benefits of home schooling your children are many. Deciding to home school your children is a choice only you can make. While many families continue to send their children to school, you may find that home schooling your children is a better choice for them and for you. You children will be as prepared for the future as their peers in regular school, if not more so. You will feel confident knowing your children received the greatest education possible, as you were their primary educator.

There are numerous benefits to home schooling and choosing the proper home school curriculum for your child. For more information about Home School and Curriculums, please do visit our site - http://www.homeschoolcurriculum.org/

By home schooling their child, they can insure these bullying will not occur during the school day.

Children with learning disabilities thrive in sports and other activities. Get your child involved in soccer or baseball, or find out from them what they enjoy. Some children need creative outlets such as acting or dancing; these are great ideas for getting the social interaction with their peers. You can also get them involved in activities such as 4H if they enjoy animals, or cub scouts for those that love the outdoors. Some parents go into home schooling thinking it will be easy and not take up much time this is not true. home schooling takes planning and cares, you are now the teacher and responsible for the education of your child and making sure they are prepared for the future. Many parents find taking classes or seminars on home schooling very beneficial. It is also a good idea to join a support group, both for home schooling and for being a parent of a child with learning disabilities.

You will find counterparts in these groups who can assist and guide you when you need it most. You will also find there are many companies that specialize in home school curriculum designed for children with learning disabilities. You have the ability to purchase one package or pick and choose from the packages you like; this is a wonderful benefit of home schooling that is not offered in public schools. Because teaching is not "one size fits all", you will find home schooling your child with learning disabilities to be wonderful for both you and them.

Does this sound familiar? "Before you begin a home schooling plan make sure you have evaluated your ability to properly instruct your child and provide a quality learning experience. If you do not think you can handle it, you might as well send your child to school but become more involved with his or her education." Kris Koonar.  Home schooling Advantages And Disadvantages. Parents, beware of articles by people who are not home schooling parents. This is a perfect example of why families should join local home schooling support groups. Home schooling is not as isolated as some people imagine.

Home schooling families come from all walks of life. Home schooling families are responsible educated parents who take full responsibility for their child's learning. They frown upon parents that blame teachers for their child doing poorly. Home schooling parents are parents who want quality education for their child as well, and are willing to provide their child with that quality education, by all means.

Most home schooling parents are willing to sacrifice their financial lives for the sake of educating their own child. The driving force that motivates families to home school is that they do have the ability to properly educate children.

Home schooling families, are well informed about home schooling options available to them." if they cannot handle it", they have plenty of home schooling options to choose from. Families can hire teachers, or tutors.  Families can use other members in home school organizations to support them.  Families can enroll children in Private Satellite programs, Charter home school program, or Online home schools.

The whole purpose of home schooling is to make sure a child is receiving the best education possible. After all, children are our future leaders.

Think of the next time you join a discussion around home schooling. When you begin sharing the fascinating home schooling facts below, your friends will be absolutely amazed.

Home schooling, despite of its popularity, is yet to have one singular standard for acceptability or validity. This means that as you go all over the nation, separate states have different levels of requirements for home schooling to be duly recognized.

The decision to home school your youngster isn't the simplest one in the books. However, once you've made your decision, it may be a good period to start thorough research and inquiry into state requirements and other guidelines you have to take into consideration once you've made the decision.

There are states like Texas, Illinois, Missouri, or Oklahoma, among others, that do not require informing the state of any intention to home school your youngster. So technically, you may opt to begin your preschooler on home schooling already or pull your youngster out of the formal pedagogical system at your own will, should you decide that home schooling is for you.

Other states, however, would require you to inform the state and your child's school of your intention to begin home schooling. It is only in this way that the state can accredit your child's grade level standing. Alongside this expression of intent and plan is the requirement of the state for you to submit exam scores, progress evaluation grades, and even your child's attendance record. The state may also specify an amount of time that should be spent in this informal school studying the various subjects you intend to teach your child.

The states with tightest home school regulations set requirements of informing the state of your intent to home school your child. Alongside this expression of intent is the submission of the curriculum you intend to teach while home schooling. You may also be tested if you qualify as a parent-teacher when you home school your youngster. State-appointed officers may also visit your home to check if it is suitable for home schooling. Separate from these requirements, submission of periodical documents like exam scores, progress evaluation grades, and attendance records may be required of you as well.

The information about home schooling presented here will do one of two things: either it will reinforce what you know about home schooling or it will teach you something new. Both are good outcomes.

Specified this volume of information that you must be familiar with when you decide that you want to give home schooling a try, where will you find the essential information?

In general, your first and most primary source of information should always be your state or local government unit's education office or authority. You can approach these agencies in two ways either through the agency's website or by visiting the physical location of the said government office. In order to save time and money, you should perhaps visit the website first. This is also most recommended as the primary course of action because of the fact that some of these educational agencies actually upload the necessary forms you have to fill out in relation to home schooling. Some of them even prefer your getting in touch with them and submitting your requirements online !

Next, you may want to check home schooling support groups and legal specialists who have put up various websites on the subject. This way, you will be able to read of firsthand experiences of people who've tried home schooling before, and in the long run, learn valuable tips and tricks in order to make it work for you. They even provide various suggestions on activities and teaching strategies you may want to try as you home school your child.

Much of home schooling is very much feel-your-way-through, so don't be scared to visit these support groups and forums and ask questions. By doing so, you would be able to make sure that you are giving your child the best sort of home schooling you can provide for him or her. Additionally, you can even find out more about the post-home schooling period, which is the time when your child begins applying for university or college, from home schooled applicants who've gone through the usually much longer process.

Home schooling, as it is, is yet to be standardized across the country. Various legislative and administrative changes are underway each day. This is where online home schooling websites may help. They can give you news updates, briefings, and summaries of various state and federal legislation on home schooling. These timely bits of information may lead you better in home schooling your child, and keep you up to date with trends and changes in rules on home schooling across your state.

Take time to consider the home schooling points presented above. What you learn may help you overcome your hesitation to take action.

Being a Home Schooling Parent: An Insider's Look

Home schooling is sweeping the United States and abroad. According to the National Center for Education Statistics for 2004, 2 million children are being home schooled in the United States alone! You are maybe asking yourself what is home schooling? Or more importantly what does it take to be a home school parent?
Home schooling is simply educating your child or children at home with you, the parent, as the educator. You do not receive federal funds and your child or children are not enrolled in a public or private school.
A home school parent by definition is a parent that has taken on the task of educating their child or children at home and I want to discuss the three most important things any parent should know and the ten things any parent should consider before taking on the task of home schooling their children.
I have been a home school parent for four years and with each year our home school has had its ups and downs and I have learned a lot about myself and my children.
The most important thing that I have learned is to trust God in this awesome task of educating and raising my children to be all that God wants them to be!
The second most important thing for a home school parent to learn is that God created our children to be a one of a kind creation, with distinct personalities and traits. I am so thankful that everyone is different with different interests. What a boring world this would be if everyone was the same! Your children are no different, learn to appreciate their uniqueness. What works for one does not always work for another, be flexible. The sooner you learn that the easier your home schooling experience will be.
The third most important thing I have learned is to teach my children to respect and appreciate their siblings and other people's interests and talents. For example, my middle daughter loves to write and has many wonderful stories she loves to tell and write about, but my oldest daughter, who has a passion for math and science, does not even like to write much less think of a topic or a story to write about, so she will ask her 6 ½ year old sister for some ideas to get her started and likewise if my middle daughter has a problem with her math she will ask my oldest daughter for help, so they are learning to appreciate each other. Believe me, when you and your children learn this important principle your home school experience will go smoother.
I hope that these three important principles have not scared you from trying home schooling with your own children. It is truly a wonderful experience in being a parent. If you are considering home schooling here are some things for you to consider:
1. It takes time to teach, prepare lessons, field trips, park days, soccer league, etc.

2.Every home school parent needs to take time out. If you don't you will be with your child 24/7 and that will lead to burnout.

3.You can home school rather inexpensively, but some curriculums or extra curricular activities can add up.

4.You, the parent, are responsible for seeing that your child socializes with friends at different events that your local home school support group set up or finding different socialization opportunities in your community.

5.The regular cleaning and laundry still have to be done and you might find yourself rearranging your cleaning schedule around school time.

6.Home schooling works better if both parents are in agreement.

7. Do your children respect you? Only you can answer that. If they don't respect you they will not listen to you.

8. Home school for one year at a time. Don't look to far ahead, you will get overwhelmed.

9.Are you intimidated about teaching?-Many curriculums offer teacher's guides and DVD's to assist you and you will find that other parents will help you if they have been through the subject before.

10.Make sure you get involved in a local home school support group. Some areas have more than one. It is encouraging to know that you are not alone and your support group will help and encourage you when you are experiencing a hard time.

Making the decision to home school can be a very difficult one and should not be taken lightly. It is a personal decision and no one can make it for you, but I hope that you will take into consideration some of the things that I have mentioned.

Home schooling takes courage and it can be a long journey but there is joy in the journey! Happy Home schooling!!!
