What are the legal requirements for home schooling grade school age kids?

home school
by herkamer

Question by juniper: What are the legal requirements for home schooling grade school age kids?
If I decide to home-school one or more of my children, what legal requirements do I have to meet in Illinois? One child is in 5th grade, the other would be in kindergarten next year. The reason would be the lack of quality education and quality teachers available where we live.

Answer by hsmomlovinit
Here are the laws and regs for Illinois: http://hslda.org/laws/analysis/Illinois.pdf

Homeschools in IL are considered to be private schools; as long as you are educating your daughter according to her ability, and you keep appropriate records, you should be fine. :)

What is home schooling / going to an online school like?

Question by LiveLaughLove: What is home schooling / going to an online school like?
I am 14 and I have gone to both public and private school and neither has worked with my schedule. Now I am checking out home schooling and it seems really interesting. I checked out a few online high schools like the Laurel Springs School but I just want to see what people think about it. Also if you can tell me any more online schools to check out that would be great. Thanks!

Educating Home School Math To Your Child

Home schooling has become a viable option for many parents who are concerned about their children's safety and their education. Home schooled children, on an average, scored 15%-20% higher than public school children. However, there is always the real concern of parents, can they adequately teach some subjects. Math, home schooling or not, is one of those subjects, as the teach and thinking about math has changed drastically in the last twenty years.

This leaves parents, who were taught math very differently trying to teach "new math" to their children adequately. This can be overcome in combination of two interlocked actions on the part of home schooling parents. The first is that the parent needs to find and obtain the schooling materials for home school math, which include home school math worksheets. The second is to go through the entire program yourself, first, before you engage with your child in home schooling of math.

If you are planning on home schooling your child, preparation in the area of math is necessary. This has nothing to do with your competence to do math. It has to do, quite seriously, with the changes, such as carrying is not longer taught as you learned it. The home school math teaching information will help you to adjust your thinking so that your child will think about math in the new manner.

Finding a home school math program is not as difficult as it seems, as most parents who have begun home schooling have access to the schooling materials. If do not already have access to home schooling materials there are several places to look. The first is a general internet search for home schooling will show both helps for home school math, specifically, and all topics. They show links for home school support groups, academic teaching information, books and the other necessary materials for home schooling in math.

Contact your state and verify what you need to do to teach your child through home school. They will also have information about what programs have been approved by the state, if your state has an approval process. Re-learning math is going to take you some time, make sure you start and finish it before you need to teach your child.

While this is not about your not being competent, it takes time to learn a new way of thinking about a subject. Your child will face tests which require them to understand math from the new perspective, if you teach them the old perspective, they will be unable to pass the tests.

Hi--the first thing you need to do is find out your state laws. In Michigan, where we live, you can do high school at home (homeschool). We are. There are plenty of websites that give instruction (go to math.com for lessons in Algebra or Geometry).

If you type in your state and homeschool, you will find a group in your state to answer your questions. If that doesn't help, post your state or send it to me and I will look it up for you. You can also go to your state government's website (consider this part of your social studies or civics or political science). Once you are in state government (here it is Michigan.gov) , go to education department and look up homeschool. If all else fails, send Education Dept an email. They work for your parents' tax money and can answer you. :-)

Also, if you plan to go to college, you can look at colleges and see their requirements. All of the ones I've looked at don't say diploma. They say ACT or SAT exam. If you don't plan to go (and plan on other training for a job) you can always take a GED test when you are ready.

Good luck! I hope this helps. We've been homeschooling for 5 years and I taught for 30 :-)

What is it like to transition from a home school to high school environment?

home school
by perpetualplum

Question by Jess Nelson: What is it like to transition from a home school to high school environment?
Hi! I am doing an assignment on home education and would love to hear about your transition from the home schooling environment to a high school environment. In particular, how did your new teachers help you to feel welcome? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by LisaN
I can only speak of my daughter's experience going into 9th grade after home schooling her entire life.

How did the teachers make her feel welcome? Well, in most cases they didn't know she had been previously home schooled her entire life. That is because she had been well-educated at home and was not behind in any subject.
In one case, the teacher would go out of his way to make snide comments on how she didn't know how to do things since she had been home schooled. Like when assigned to hang drama posters, "I guess you know how to hang a poster, since your home school put on so many dramas! Ha Ha Ha." He meant it as a joke, but after a while it got a little old. In fact, she had already starred in 4-H productions, as well as parts in adult community theater. Plus the home school group put on plays at a school campus. Some of the other drama students picked up on his "humor" too. Trying to convince her she didn't know how the "real world worked." Calling her "stupid home schooler." The teacher thought they were hilarious. No, he was not much of a teacher.

She stayed in that school from 9th to half way through 10th. It was a waste of her day. Too much time wasted. Needless assignments and homework. After home schooling from age 4 on, the cookie cutter methods of the classroom just didn't work for her. She wanted to learn more, in a shorter time period. Without cliques, and teen drama. Unfortunately some of those same drama kids are now at the community college she goes to. Oh well... she learned to deal with them before. (She is 2 years younger than they, but in the same class at school. So, who says home schoolers are stupid now? The joke's on them!)

Is There A Free Home School Program?

If you want to home school your child but are strapped for cash, you should know that there is always the option of finding a free home school program. Just make sure that you take the time to find a free home school program that is not going to be skimping anything.

If you are home schooling your child you need to make sure that they are receiving just as proper an education as they would be in a public school, and so it can definitely take a bit of time and effort to find a free home school program that is going to have the standards that you need to be looking for. Anyone looking for a free home school program, a home school reading program, is definitely going to want to consider the following programs for their child.

Planet CD Rom

Here you can find a great selection of free home school programs, ensuring that you can offer your child everything you want. They offer quality, full-version and free home school programs, and all you have to pay for is the shipping and delivery charges.

There are no membership clubs that you need to join, no strings attached. You can select from a large assortment of home school software learning, education, reference, and other hard to find home school software titles here, and everything is free.

Time 4 Learning

Another option for a free home school program is Time 4 Learning. They offer a new approach that takes advantage of today's technology, and have a convenient, online home education program that combines learning with fun educational teaching games for your child.

They know that kids like using the computer and so they are able to offer a program that allows your child to have fun and enjoy themselves at the same time that they are learning the skills they would in a public school. These are certainly not the only worthwhile options out there for a free home schooling program, but they are two of the very best.

Make sure that you take your time and keep your child in mind when you are trying to find a home schooling program, and you are sure to come out of this with the results that you were looking for. You may even want to speak to a teacher, or another parent who is already home schooling their child to help you get through this successfully.

Q&A: How can someone graduate home school high school at 16?

home school
by finishing-school

Question by Discombobulated: How can someone graduate home school high school at 16?
Does home school have the same curriculum as the public schools? Isn't it easier, otherwise how does someone finish high school at 16?

Best answer:

Answer by Lisa N
There is no one answer. Each state home schooling laws differ. Home schools do not have a "curriculum." You can study at your own pace, and therefore, may do the upper class work when younger. It is not easier, just different. Also, some home schoolers go to community college for classes. In our area the classes are worth 3x the units, so one semester is worth one year of high school, if you are in a district program. My son graduated from high school (with a home school district program) at 16, needing only PE and health for his AA. So, there are ways to do it that are not easier, or cheating. That is what I think you are thinking home school parents are doing! Just graduation their kids early. Also, my daughter just took the CHSPE test, that gives the equivalent of a diploma. You only have to be done with 10th grade or 16 years old.

What type of diploma do home schooled high school students earn?

Question by kelannde: What type of diploma do home schooled high school students earn?
I am considering homeschooling my high school aged son.
What type of diploma will he earn (in Tennessee) if he is homeschooled - or will it just be a GED?
I will be an independent home schooler, not affiliated with a church or other organization.
I'm aware of the requirements, but have been unable to find out what type of diploma he will earn, or if it is simply a GED.

Best answer:

Answer by hsmomlovinit
He would earn a regular high school diploma; the difference is, you would be the one to sign it.

This is completely legitimate in all 50 states, and colleges across the country (including Ivy League) accept homeschool diplomas. You don't have to go through an accredited school or umbrella program, and you don't have to get a GED. You set the requirements, keep the records, and award the diploma when he has completed those requirements.

Hope that helps!

Is it possible to home school a middle schooler while working full time?

Question by siropson: Is it possible to home school a middle schooler while working full time?
I'm debating home schooling my son after this school year (he's in 5th grade). But I work full time and cannot be a SAHM even though I'd like to. How hard do you think it would it be to home school him and work full time? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by firebird2110x
As long as you've got someone to look after him while you're at work you can cover your contribution to his homeschooling in the evenings and at weekends. It's much more efficient being 1 to 1 so you won't need to put in anywhere near the number of hours he would be at school.
