Question by juniper: What are the legal requirements for home schooling grade school age kids?
If I decide to home-school one or more of my children, what legal requirements do I have to meet in Illinois? One child is in 5th grade, the other would be in kindergarten next year. The reason would be the lack of quality education and quality teachers available where we live.

Here are the laws and regs for Illinois: http://hslda.org/laws/analysis/Illinois.pdf
Homeschools in IL are considered to be private schools; as long as you are educating your daughter according to her ability, and you keep appropriate records, you should be fine.

Question by Tweety: What are some good home school curriculums for a sixth grade girl?
It is my first year to home school my daughter. She is very into art, music and role playing so I am looking for a curriculum that will inspire her to learn. I have heard Switched on School House is good but very expensive.
All wonderful helpful answers, thank you.

I have used Alpha Omega: both the Life Pacs and the Switched on School house curriculum. They really didn't work for my kids due to their learning styles. I currently use a mixture for my high school: Saxon math, Bob Jones World Geography, A-Beka English, Apologia science... I wouldn't say that any of these would inspire her artistically.
You might look into unit studies. You do have to do more work as far as planning but it allows you to center her learning around her favorite activities. You can study certain pieces of music and incorporate what was happening in history at the time the music was written, learn about levers/pulleys and other science things by studying how a piano or other instrument is made or used. Have her do a research paper or write an essay about a famous artist. Vocabulary and spelling can be pulled from plays / books she likes. I'm not very familiar with the different unit study publishers but you could try checking out homeschool curriculum sites for info.

Question by #1Diva: Can I homeschool during the summer so my child can skip a grade or two?
I have an 11 yr. old stepson whose mother isn't very involved in his education(although he lives with her full time). Therefore he hasn't done very well in school and has failed twice, leaving him in the 3rd grade. I am wondering if there is a way to homeschool him this summer, so that when the new school year starts he'll be in at least the 5th if not the 6th instead of the 4th?
