Q&A: How do I put home school teaching on my resume?

home school
by perpetualplum

Question by Kristen: How do I put home school teaching on my resume?
I am a certified teacher who is currently home schooling my children. I know this is not giving me actual classroom experience, but I am getting experience teaching 4th and 6th grade curriculum. I am also continuously doing my own professional development online. In my state, if you home school your children, you are legally considered an employee of the home school program you go through (Home Life Academy, Gateway, etc). I'm trying to figure out how to put this on my resume. Any advice?

More kids are being homeschooled than ever. While it was once very rare to choose to teach your kids at home, now lots of families choose to do just that. Studies have shown that kids who are homeschooled do better on tests, perform better in college and are better able to work independently and not let socialization get in the way of job performance later on in life. When kids are homeschooled they develop stronger family bonds, studies also show. Deciding to homeschool your kids, though, is just the first step in the process. You also need to decide on the curriculum. Use the following information to help get you started.

There are federal regulations that govern K-12 education and you need to understand them before buying lesson plans or enrolling your kids in online classes. While there are federal rules to know and follow, most of the regulations are left up to the individual states.

Make sure you understand them and that your curriculum meets the requirements that are currently in practice. To get more information on these rules and requirements, you should contact your local board of education or you can contact the Department of Education directly. Montessori and Waldorf schools are also becoming popular. Most of these schools embrace an advanced style of learning. You may have heard peope joke about these schools being for geniuses. There's great news for you, there are homeschool curriculums that are just like these schools. The focus of Montessori curriculum is in keeping children active and working while they learn. The founders of this type of curriculum would roll over in their graves at the thought of allowing a child to learn by watching TV or a computer all day. This plan is probably best for you if you don't want your kids sitting in front of a tv or computer all day.

As you may already know you are not locked into one curriculum you can mix it up if you want. Alot of parents find mixing up their curriculums very useful in keeping their kids interested. Each subject may need to be done differently because kids are pretty versatile creatures. Parents often wonder if homeschooling won'tbe too hard becuase they are afraid their kids will get bored. Mixing curriculums will allow you to keep your kids interested and educated. many kids learn better with alot of variety.

Perhaps you don't like the way your public schools are run. Or maybe you can't afford a private school. Or the studies that show homeschooled kids do better later on in life persuaded you. Whatever your reasons for keeping everyone at home, make sure you choose good homeschool curriculum packages and projects. Your choice in curriculum is quite possibly the most important factor to their success. The better informed you are about the different types of homeschool curriculum, the better you can make sure you're choosing the right one.

Tips on Choosing a Homeschool Curriculum Package:

Before you buy a homeschooling curriculum package online or offline, you should read the following tips on choosing the best education program for your child.

First, assess your child's current condition. Determine your child's learning needs and your short term and long term goals. Assess your child if you'll be homeschooling a child for a year or more. Moreover, choose what philosophy you want to teach your child - Christian, another faith or secular.

Second, pinpoint your core values. Understanding your core values as well as your child would greatly influence your homeschool curriculum choices. Find out your views on education, your role on your child's education, your child's responsibilities and even what success means to you.

Third, be at ease with one or more of the home schooling methods. Whenever you encounter problems with a program, don't sell yourself short. Try not to change methods ever so often. You'll be able to tell if such program is perfect for your child if the core values mentioned earlier is manifested. The following are some of the most popular methods for teaching or approach that you may use: Literature or Textbooks, Self-teaching, Unit Study, Principle Approach and Delight Directed.

Fourth, select your home school curriculum and make adjustment. Remember not to let someone else's core values affect your child's education in a a negative way. Don't waste time with what you don't need.

Finally, do not overstress yourself and your child. Keep in mind that home schooling your child should be a cheerful and a fun way to bond with your child.

by Tidewater Muse

Question by greener_08: I want to start a home-school program from my Home for children having a hard time emotionally in PublicSchool?
However, my current home is a mobile home and it is not big enough for a classroom. There are several grants available for non-profit Christian organizations, which I hope to create, BUT would I be able to use the grant money to buy a bigger modular home to put on my property in order to give kids who are depressed, emotionally unstable, or have a hard time in public school a safe environment to come and learn with out charging them anything.

Home School Registration Bill Hearing

February 15, 2011 Springfield, IL - Illinois lawmakers held a hearing Tuesday morning to review Senate Bill 136, the Home School Registration Bill. If passed, the bill would require that all home schooled children register with the Illinois State Board of Education. Proponents claim it will help them better offer services to home schooled children and also keep tabs on evaluations of their education progress. Opponents claim another government bureaucracy will not help the children at all, and will only act to bog parents down with more paper work. Home school parents and representatives also believe SB 136 would take away their freedom to educate their children. Filmed and edited by Greg Bishop www.wmay.com
