Question by Michelle M: What is the best way to advertise a class to homeschool families?
I have started a new program offering instrumental music classes to homeschool students at two local churches. I’ve been told by several homeschool parents that the concept is great and really should meet a need. The problem is that I am having trouble getting the word out. I’ve submitted the information to a number of e-mail lists in my area (Orlando, FL), with links to my website, but it seems very ‘hit-and-miss.’ What is an effective way to advertise to homeschooling families? I have had great success getting my business out there by using Craigslist and Kijiji. There 2 classified sites made a huge difference in getting the name of my business out there. And with both of them you can specifically target your local area, and they are free to use.

Question by violin_duchess86: I am doing a homeschool synthesis essay for English 225. Do you know of any articles against homeschooling?
I was homeschooled K-12 and was wondering if anybody knows of articles that are articulate and thoughtful in their opposition towards homeschooling? I have found some, but most of them are simply homeschool hate letters. And of course, the articles supporting homeschooling are full of nothing but praise. I really don’t want to get into the ‘homeschool/abusive household’ thing becuase it simply is not valid homeschooling. Any help would be much appreciated.

there is an opposing viewpoints book on homeschoolings. The articles they include are usually well written.

Question by Duchess: Where can I find a good Homeschool group in the Detroit Area?
I’m new to this area and live in a suburb … I’m looking for a homeschool group as that’s how my own children are schooled. Where we used to live I belonged to one, but here … I can’t seem to find any very easily. Any ideas?

Boy, I can see why you’re having such a hard time. I googled and couldn’t find a thing to try and help out. However, at Jon’s Homeschool Resources site I was able to find the following: http://www.midnightbeach.com/hs/Michigan.html I didn’t weed through the whole thing to specifically find Detroit but mostly because I do not know which surrounding suburb you live in. Have you tried to do a specific suburb homeschool search?

Just wondering if homeschool groups pool their money together to get tutors to help with writing, math, etc. I am a certified teacher with 25 years under my belt and a Masters in Education. Was wondering if I should contact my local homeschooling group to “sell myself” at and hour.

I’ve never heard of a group doing that, although the odd parent here and there will ask if anybody knows any tutors. However, if you had some more creative sessions to offer rather than just tutoring, I think you’d definitely generate some interest.
